Lilly Gery is a professional. Once a teacher in China, she moved to New York and earned her masters degree in accounting. She then spent the next several years as an accountant and financial analyst.

In 1999, however, Lilly’s life changed with the birth of her daughter. She realized that she needed a new source of income. “After I had my daughter, I decided I want to stay home. So that’s why I was looking for something that I could have flexible hours and be my own boss.”

Lilly wants to have an active role in her daughter’s life. “I want to be the one to give her influence, not the babysitter,” she says, “or anybody else. So that’s why I want to choose to stay home with her.”

Even before her daughter came, Lilly wanted to start her own business, but she never really got the chance to do it. “I was afraid of a big investment,” Lilly explains, “so I went to Stores Online. I thought that may be a thing I could do too so I could be home and do my business.”

When Lilly got her invitation to a StoresOnline Preview, she thought that this would be
her chance to get her own business in the new world of ecommerce.

After attending the StoresOnline workshop, Lilly did some further research of her own and decided that StoresOnline would be a good route to start her business.

Initially, Lilly tried selling Chinese recipes and special spices to make them. She then found a drop shipper for inflatable products, such as children’s swimming pools and ball pits. The nice thing about drop shipping is that Lilly doesn’t need to keep any inventory. “I don’t have a warehouse, and I don’t want to get into that either,” she says.

Lilly doesn’t miss the accounting business. “I love this business I’m running now, because I have flexibility and I’m in control, and I don’t have to go out looking for jobs and I don’t have to stick to 9:00 to 5:00 and I could have more time with my daughter, and I have extra cash coming.”

Lilly encourages those who want to start their business not to worry. “I think there’s so many products out there that you can sell, it’s just that you have to get yourself started.”
