This version of the very traditional native style Thunder Bird is done in the four colors of Mother Earth...black, white, red and yellow. It also features a bountiful beadwork fringe hanging from the bottom, and tubular Peyote beading on the four stand braided leather neckbands. Many hours of work went in to the creation of this striking necklace. The Thunderbird is one of the few cross-cultural elements of Native American mythology. He is found among Plains Indians, Pacific Northwest and Northeastern tribes. The wingspan of the Thunderbird is described to be twice a long as a Native Indian war canoe. Under its wings are lightning snakes which the Thunderbird uses as weapons. The Thunderbird is a symbol of strength as well as change with the three tail feathers representing the past, present and future. Check below for other versions of the Thunderbird imagery.
