About DuhBom.com Search Engines

DuhBom.com is being built with the goal of being the search engine of choice for everyone who isn't already committed to using any of the current search engines. DuhBom.com began as an idea by a couple of guys who thought it would be cool to have a search engine that had just the features we wanted.

So.......Here's what we need from you

We would like for you to use DuhBom.com search engine for all of your internet searches...use DuhBom search engine as your homepage. It's set up now with the features we like. You can check your email, use the “map” tab to get maps or directions, or use the “watch” tab to view TV, news or movies. When you think of a feature you feel would be a good addition to DuhBom, click on the “Build it” tab at the top of the page. Fill out the form and let us know about your suggestion. If we think it's a good idea, we'll put a poll on the page and let other DuhBom search engine users vote on your idea. If enough people think you're on to something, we'll add it to the page.

About Search Engines

Internet search engines are search engines designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. Information may consist of web pages, images and other types of files. Some search engines also mine data available in newsbooks, databases, or open directories. Unlike Web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input.

How Search Engines work

Internet search engines work by storing information about many web pages, which they retrieve from the WWW itself. These pages are retrieved by a Web crawler (sometimes also known as a spider) — an automated Web browser which follows every link it sees. The contents of each page are then analyzed to determine how it should be indexed in the search engines (for example, words are extracted from the titles, headings, or special fields called meta tags). Data about web pages are stored in an index database for use by search engines in later queries. Some search engines, such as Google (which is the power supply behind DuhBom.com), store all or part of the source page (referred to as a cache) as well as information about the web pages, whereas others store every word of every page they find. DuhBom.com's power by Google search engines increases usability by satisfying user expectations that the search engines terms will be on the returned webpage. Increased search engine relevance makes these cached pages very useful, even beyond the fact that they may contain data that may no longer be available elsewhere.

When a user enters a query into search engines (typically by using keywords), the search engines examine their index and provide a listing of best-matching web pages according to its criteria, usually with a short summary containing the document's title and sometimes parts of the text.

The usefulness of a search engines depend on the relevance of the result set it gives back. While there may be millions of search engines or webpages that include a particular word or phrase, some pages may be more relevant, popular, or authoritative than others to certain search engines. Most search engines employ methods to rank the results to provide the "best" results first. How search engines decide which pages are the best matches, and what order the results should be shown in, varies widely amoung search engines to another. The methods various search engines use also change over time as Internet usage changes and new techniques evolve.
