What Is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is the process by which feelings, issues, problems, stresses, symptoms, disorders, etc. are discussed openly, addressed and resolved appropriately. What form this process takes, whether or not it is successful and how it turns out depends a lot, in my opinion, on the dynamic between the therapist and client or clients, the willingness of the client to be an active partner in the helping and healing process and do his/her/their part towards working on and resolving issues (even if his/her/their part is just being open and honest in discussion and in giving and receiving feedback). I believe that the therapist and client are equally responsible for working out issues and problems. My role is to help you gain insight and awareness as well as to facilitate your healing and problem solving so that you can assume more control in your life with the issues that present themselves and in general. This is not to say that you are to blame for the problems that have occurred in your life, but for true healing, you need to assume responsibility for working on the problems and resolving them appropriately. Psychotherapy can assist in this process.

One of the most difficult decisions you or someone you know may have to make is finding a therapist with whom you are able to effectively address and resolve your issues. When one is struggling emotionally and is in dire need of help, the last thing you want is to have to struggle through the process of finding a good therapist. But, unless you know someone who knows a good therapist, you are usually left with having to pick a name at random from the telephone directory or from your health insurance provider manual. Allow me to introduce myself...

ABOUT MARGARET

I am a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a private practice located in Marianna, FL. I also work with Florida Therapy Services and PanCare Health, providing outpatient psychiatric medication management services. I relocated to Marianna, FL in August 2006 after living and working in Philadelphia, PA for 16 years. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1994 and Masters in Social Work in 1999, both from the University of Pennsylvania. I also received an Associates in Nursing from Chipola College in May 2010 and a Masters in Nursing from University of South Alabama in December 2013.  I was licensed as a social worker in 1999, and was licensed as a clinical social worker in 2003. I was licensed as a registered nurse in June 2010.  Before I received my Masters, I served as an intake worker and research technician for an outpatient drug and alcohol facility at the University of Pennsylvania. Since receiving my Masters degree in 1999, I have worked with several private and public non-profit social service and mental health agencies in Pennsylvania including Women’s Resource Center, Belmont Center for Comprehensive Treatment, TACCT (Teaching Adults and Children through Counselor and Training), the Consortium, Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems, Family Service Association of Bucks County, and WES Health Centers.

I have a Certificate in Brief Treatment from Bryn Mawr University in Pennsylvania.

As an African-American woman and a first generation Nigerian-American, I am especially sensitive to cultural issues. My focus in working with clients is to help them gain and maintain control in their lives despite past or present issues and circumstances, and to deal with those issues appropriately. To this end, I use a variety of theoretical approaches as suits the particular clients that I am working with, including cognitive-behavioral, family systems, structural, psychodynamic, solution-focused, supportive, and strategic.

I am a single mother and live in Marianna, FL.
