Get Your Routines Critiqued by Judge Judy

Get a professional evaluation of your gymnastics routines from Judge Judy. Each routine will be broken down and viewed with slow motion and/or still frames. Judge Judy will provide a running commentary along with overlays and captions to give you audio and visual feedback for maximum clarity of expectations and deductions.

Exercises are critiqued for execution and compositional deductions but are NOT given a score. The evaluation is based on repeated viewings with slow motion and frame by frame techniques which do not simulate actual competition conditions. All critiques are the opinion of the author and meant to educate and assist you. Critiques are not intended to be used to undermine scores or judgements received in actual meet situations.

General Video Considerations

General Video Considerations

Try to get clear shots without people blocking the view. You only need audio for FX, so you may mute the video clip. Keep the clip size as concise as possible for file uploading.

The quality of the video and especially the angle from which elements are shot will affect the quality of the evaluation. Evaluation of angles and split positions will sometimes be logical assumptions as is also the case when judges have less than optimal viewing positions in meets.

Vault

Vault

  • Shoot from the side of the vault table.
  • Keep the entire body of the gymnast in the frame at all times.
  • Follow the run of the gymnast if possible. (Required for Level 4, since the run is also evaluated.)
  • Keep the end of the vault table in the frame during the landing phase of the vault.
  • If using a fixed/stationary position, train it on the side of the table keeping the board, table and landing spot in the frame as well as the entire flight path of the gymnast.
Uneven Bars

Uneven Bars

  • Shoot from the side of the bars.
  • Minimize camera swings and don't zoom in and out.
  • If using a stationary set-up, keep the entire gymnast in the frame including handstands on HB.
  • For maximum image size, you may need to swing from the fixed position just to capture the dismount.
Balance Beam

Balance Beam

  • Shoot from the middle of the side of the beam.
  • Follow gymnast's passes keeping beam surface and entire gymnast in the frame.
  • Adjust the camera level to capture dismount and landing.
Floor Exercise

Floor Exercise

  • Shoot from the middle of a sideline.
  • Make sure the audio is ON
  • Follow the gymnast.
  • Do not zoom in too close but try not to let the image get too small for observation.
  • FX is the hardest event to get good footage with a single camera. If possible, choose an angle that captures side views of major elements.
