So, who is Spider-Man 2099… the character was created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi in 1992 for Marvel's Marvel 2099 comic book line and is a futuristic re-imagining of his namesake created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Miguel O'Hara is Spider-Man in the 2099 comic books and was born near the end of the "Heroic Age", which is the modern-day era of Marvel heroes. Miguel grew up with in an abusive relationship with his father, but Miguel a rebellious young man posses great intelligence which allows him to escape his fathers abuse. He is awarded enrollment in Alchenax School for gifted students, and his intelligence propels him to eventually head the genetics program at Alchemax (Alchemax owns the gifted school; Alchenax). Inspired by records he finds about Spider-Man that he hopes to one day create a similar powered person.
After Miquel builds a machine that can overwrite a person’s DNA, possibly giving them super-powers like Spider-Man his first test subject dies and Miquel devasted wishes to resign from his position and discontinue his genetics research. The company not wanting to lose Miguel has Tyler Stone tricking him into taking Rapture, an addictive drug that genetically bonds to the user. Tyler than informs him that only Alchemax can legally distribute this drug, so if O'Hara does stay with the company and continue his research he must obtain the drug illegally and he will inform the authorities once he does!
Miquel, not wanting to be addicted to drugs and be placed under the thumb of Alchemax, sneaks into Alchemax and uses the machine on himself… and the result: the birth of Spider-Man 2099. This Spider-Man has had many cross-overs in the Marvel Universe along with a several mini-series.
